Children at two academies in the South Hams, which are both part of the Learning Academy Partnership, were invited to take part in a range of exciting Physics masterclasses.
Children from All Saints’ Thurlestone C of E Academy and Charleton C of E Academy attended a few fantastic primary masterclasses at Kingsbridge Community College. The secondary school conducted the masterclasses in association with the Royal Institution and the Ogden Trust.
During the masterclasses, the children participated in experiments that involved a Van de Graaff, dry ice explosions and combusting soapy gas bubbles. Royal Institution masterclasses aim to stimulate, encourage and inspire young people in the beauty and wonder of Physics and to develop a sense of enjoyment in the subject.
Kingsbridge Community College invited the children to take part in the classes in order to encourage a love of Physics. Students at the secondary school supported with the creation of the masterclasses to highlight to the children the fun that they have in their Physics lessons.
The children really enjoyed attending the masterclasses and having the opportunity to take part in the range of exciting activities and experiments that the high school students had organised.
Eli, a Year 5 pupil at All Saints’ Thurlestone C of E Academy, said: “My favourite was the Life Cycle of Stars Masterclass as we lit magnesium in a Bunsen burner and produced a brilliant white light like a star.”
Katie Coombe, Head of Academy at Charleton C of E Academy, said: “I am delighted that our pupils had such a wonderful time taking part in the masterclasses. I am really proud of how enthusiastic and curious they all were to learn about all the different physics experiments.
“Thank you to Kingsbridge Community College, Royal Institution and Ogden Trust for inviting our pupils to attend these fantastic masterclasses and for showcasing how exciting physics can be.”
